Reply to Welcome to Mirror's Edge Catalyst

If anyone else has anything to say feel free to add it here. I just think that it would be appropriate to say something to Sara Jansson and her team for the feat that they have accomplished.

It has been a long 8 years and for a good portion of that Faith has been on one of my screens, whether it was my Xbox 360, iPhone, Web browser, PC, or more recently Xbox One.

I know that the team put a lot of effort into Mirror's Edge 8 years ago because when I first saw it, it blew my mind. There had never been a first person free running game. It was a completely new genre that brought to life some of the aspects of other AAA titles such as Titanfall. The Mirror's Edge team set a standard that other development teams are seen struggling to match. I have yet to see a game that takes a complex environment and simplifies it to it's purity while implementing guides directly into the objects.

Mirror's Edge was seen less and less after about the 6th year however the near mint Xbox 360 game and case still had a place in my collection which I would take out every few months to just experience the story again or try to 3 star a time trial I had not yet mastered (Atrium 3 anyone?).

Back in 2011 I heard rumors about Mirror's Edge 2 and got excited only to read later on that it had been cancelled and it was a sad day for me. Later I heard more about a reboot and saw the runner bag in Battlefield along with the bright green room that had a Mirror's Edge style to it and my hope was restored. More recently at E3 when I saw the trailer I was thrilled that Faith was about to make a comeback for real.

As soon as I received notice of the Frontrunner program I signed up, hoping that I'd get to be a part of the development and help the team that provided me with years of enjoyment. That Friday I received an email at work with my code and I could hardly wait to get off work to redeem it. Once game started downloading my excitement started building with every MB transferred.
I had been waiting almost 5 years for this and it was a sense of relief when Origin told me the game had downloaded. One of those "almost there" moments.

I started up the game, heard the chime and smiled. I didn't know what to expect other than what I had seen in the screenshots, but playing it was a different feeling than just seeing the screenshots. Once I finally gained control over Faith I just stood there, watching the world you all created for all of us move around me taking in the countless hours, the late nights (I'm sure you all had a few), the suffering from coder and designer's block. It's all written in the rain, the buildings, the billboards, the people, and of course Faith. My hours with the beta were intense and fun, I hope I was able to help provide meaningful feedback to the team.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst was so great that I ended up purchasing Origin Access just for the Play First trial. I extended my trial by limiting myself each day so I'd have time with Faith and Noah each day before the release. I almost hit 18,000 xp, just 400 xp away. Finally the day has arrived and if I didn't have to cover for someone else at work, I'd be home playing it right now using my vacation days.

To Sara:
Thank you for putting together what is in my opinion the best development team I've ever known. Your dedication to them and their dedication to you have shown in what you have provided your fans.

To the Design Team:
You all are absolutely amazing, your attention to detail, providing great contrast between colors while keeping the minimalism on such a large scale make this game everything a visual perfectionist could ask for. You effectively made a construction site look clean, kudos.

To the Logic Team:
Your emphasis on physics did not go unnoticed, you all have taken Mirror's Edge to a new level, blending inertia, centrifugal force, and of course every runners sworn enemy before K-SEC: gravity, into a meticulous blend of awesome. Your time spent on this game was well spent.

To the Animation Team:
Great job with all of the animations, everything seems lifelike and every action appears how it should. You all gave it everything you had and it shows.

To the Sound Team:
I am an audiophile so yeah I noticed that you provided that crunch sound for gravel rooftops. Your solid hits (Faith actually hitting something) and the other solid hits (the soundtrack of course) have created a masterpiece, your symphony of city sounds and wind is relaxing and if I didn't have a time limit I would have sat still for a little longer to get a better listen.

To the Marketing Team:
Great job keeping up with all of us on social media (seriously, at least 3 posts per comment on Facebook, kudos) and keeping our tensions high.

To the Mirror's Edge Catalyst Team:
You all are a collective of geniuses, every one of you came together to bring us something great and you did. The blending of all of your talents have made one of the most beautiful and challenging games I've ever played. I thank every one of you for your time, I'd also like to thank your significant others for allowing you to share your extended hours with the rest of the world.

To most of the Game Critics on their reviews:
You're obviously playing the wrong game.

I cannot wait to see how the story unfolds with Faith and you can count me as a satisfied customer.

  • Nice review, It's good that you thanked the dev teams individually, I didn't think about that.
  • Very cool write up

It's nice to see positive comments in a world so full of entitlement.

I love the way you set this thank you up and I hope that they get to see it! I bet that it would be nice to see this instead of all the junk they usually see. I haven't been able to get the game yet but definitely will when I can!
