Catalyst Has No Atmosphere

I became a Mirror's Edge fan because of the incredible atmosphere, aesthetics, colors, and design of the original. None of that is in Catalyst. There's no atmosphere at all. The more futuristic concept should have given the game an even better atmosphere, but they handled it completely wrong. The game feels more like a first person version of Infamous as opposed to Mirror's Edge. All of the different districts in the city look drastically different. There's a lack of cohesion. Compare the underground drains of Catalyst to the underground drains seen in the original Mirror's Edge. Catalyst's underground drains look like every other dark and gritty FPS game whereas the original's underground drains are brightly lit with a strong white and green design and memorable aesthetics. The 2013 announcement trailer for Catalyst had an incredible atmosphere which was as good as the original. The game completely changed for the worse since the 2013 announcement trailer. I'm just disappointed that the reason I loved Mirror's Edge is gone.

  • The same here. Although the game looks in many places visual really good ,you can hardly compare it with the first game . This city is to clean and futuristic and because of this the atmosphere is missing because it's not the original concept from the first mirrors edge

I would actually say that's the opposite problem. The city in Catalyst is dark and gritty in a number of areas, such as the construction site and underground rains. It lacks the bright whites and cleanliness of the original. Outside of the bay area, most areas in Catalyst are also cluttered.
  • I think both game have an atmosphere of their own.
I can understand the distanciation when trying to compare to the first one since basically, beside the game mechanic, everything's change (sounds like a bad commercial timeline).

They did a Wall Turn 180° it's another direction they've taken with this one.
I think it's good, I like the raw aspect of both game that feels more like experimental unfinished game rather than a pretty package with an empty content.

There are definitely ways to push further and things to keep and improve.
I think the biggest disappointment I had in the game was the train "mission" at the very end.
It felt more like a short cinematic than an actual gameplay sequence, maybe it was an homage to the awesome train scene in the first one.

I think they should for a future game continue building up on what is established and worked well and expand it (which IMO what catalyst tried but failed in a sense).
They spent so much time building an open world glass city that the underground and the train sequence felt very short compared to the first one.

But IMO they managed to make better combat mod, I just wish the AI wouldn't be that ****.

Both game have their pros and cons and I can totally understand why you wouldn't like any or prefer one compare to the other.

It's kind of the same but it's really different.
  • I miss OP in this game ;-)

    You think? ^^
  • Saying that Catalyst got no atmosphere is a false statement, even logically. It has a different atmosphere than the first part - agree. But for me it works better. First game was quite a claustrophobic. I played it first time not even a year ago so I got it fresh. Catalyst is much more closer to the reality so maybe that's what the previous game didn't have. If this is what you call atmosphere, then I'm glad it's gone! Really, the new City of Glass gives me shivers. It's so real and awesome. Open world gives the vibe that this is not just a game render, but you can really see it's as a living thing.

With this logic I wouldn't even try to play incoming FFVII remake. Cause it's not as the original! Well, that's why they're making it again right? Really, before you say that this one have nothing good, just try to play the old one, and compare it based on that, instead of the emotions you remembered from playing the first part years ago. For me, Catalyst is a perfect successor of the ME legend!
  • Having all of the different areas be different is a good thing. In a futuristic setting like this one where society is all about homogeneity, I'm glad the architecture goes against that. It would be extremely dull to be surrounded by white ALL the time.
