I noticed something...

So, recently I've noticed that the official Facebook and twitter page for MEC hasn't been posting much lately. This worries me as they used to post something every single day if to tell us that they haven't left the game behind. This just could be because who ever manages these pages is busy, but another theory i had is maybe they are going to surprise us with something??? I've noticed since they announced the game, that when they haven't posted in a while, they announce something new after a few days. This is just what I've noticed, but i hope they haven't left Catalyst behind, because on multiple occasions I've said that Catalyst has potential, the potential to continue on for a sequel.

Does anyone else think so too??? Do you think we will get a DLC or New game in good time??? To be honest i really, really hope that they will continue on with Catalyst somehow, whether its a DLC or sequel.

  • I hope they will too. This game was amazing and it really does have potential for a sequel. There is still so much of the city we haven't explored, let alone the country.

IMO Catalyst was a fantastic game. The gameplay is smooth and responsive, the graphics are astounding, lighting and other effects are great, and just the overall quality of the game (minus occasional bugs and slightly poor optimization), is impressive.

Sadly, all of it was let down by a very short, underwhelming and cliché'd story. I can't imagine the sales did very well, but I hope for a potential sequel that just improves on what Catalyst did well. If they do continue the franchise (which seems a bit likely, the ending was basically a cliffhanger), I hope they hire some more competent writers because this game did everything really, really well on every front except for story. Which sometimes, isn't always a bad thing. Gameplay is much more important than story most of the time, but in a story-driven game like Catalyst, we need a strong narrative and good characters to give us a motive to continue playing. The narrative felt pretty loose after halfway through, it feels like all the effort went into Release, Back in the Game, and Benefactor. Interestingly, the comics were okay. They were written by the same guy IIRC so I don't know what happened there.

I think the best way I could explain why I feel that way is that I'm playing this game because it's MIRROR'S EDGE. You know, that fantastic game with gameplay like no other from 8 years ago which everyone thought was dead. Through those 8 years, all we got to satisfy our virtual freerunning needs was Brink, Dying Light, and maybe Assassin's Creed could fit in there too. The story was that bland and typical. This world has so much potential and they didn't take any advantage of it. There was no meat to it.

Please if SOMEONE from DICE is reading this, we loved this game, and we want and will pay for more. Just spend a bit more than 5 minutes on the plot next time, because I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed that it was all just the typical "rich, ruling opressor wants to take over and control the world" cliché.

  • I would love some DLC opening up the city more and expanding the narrative, I enjoyed the story much more the second time I played it, I guess because the second time around I was paying attention a bit more to the little things. Even though the story was kind of a let down, it really did have it's moments where I was left in a, "wow, that scene was done pretty well" moments, but the same goes for those, "well that could've been done better, also was kind of cliché" moments. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the story could've been really good, it did have its moments, and I just hope they fix a lot of the story through DLC.

I will admit that some parts were done well, most notably the conversation with Dogen after she finds out Isabelle is her sister. The tone, music and voice acting were superb. Tightrope walking between the two towers on the Shard was also breathtaking. That's what I mean when I say this game had so much potential. They made parts where you're alone with the ambient music over a huge drop, or having a heavy-hearted pep talk on the floor with a crime lord really stand out and have an impact. But sadly Dogen's character was reduced to a generic angry chef who talks in food puns.

I hate to keep going on about what went wrong with the narrative, but I just had so much hope for a better story this time around. It's depressing.
  • Yeah I suppose they chopped Dogen's character a little (soory, I had to...hope I didn't spoil your broth)

While I do like the game, there are annoying things like the obvious "you cannot grab this or you'd be able to get out of bounds" parts, or the fact Faith cannot climb a mesh fence but can slide up a wet pipe with speed...

At the end it felt a little bit like a "this game looks like Mirror's Edge" but wasn't quite the same. Also felt like she did all that work for nothing but i guess that's leading in for more story.

I'd like an option to get more camera movement as it's too stagnant compared to the previous one.

The graphic design is very nice though despite a large area of white buildings. Shard seemed a little bland at times due to huge building but with lots of area not in use. But it was great for the parts we did visit. I'd love if more areas were explorable and without ksec.
Eg can we hack those annoying grid print cameras... The corps never fix their hacked billboards so why would they fix their cameras? :-P

You can destroy the cameras by using the Disruptor ability.
  • maybe the team's on vacation?
