Stuttering and Blinking.

The new patch totally broke the game for me.

Every time the game loads between missions or in the menu the screen blinks black rapidly like crazy.

Also now my game freezes/stutters every 10 seconds.

Terrible experience. Every time I want to play it now, it just stops me with all the freezing.

Sad sad situation for a game I barely even started playing properly and one that just launched.

  • Same for me. The game ran amazing before this latest patch, now it stutters and freezes all the time making it unplayable. I am redownloading it in a desperate attempt to get it to work again because I have tried messing with everything else.
  • I noticed that after the update, the game only stuttered in-game when using a controller. If you're using one, try to play the game with Keyboard + Mouse and see if it gives any difference
  • Yeah, I just tried playing it with no controller plugged in and it is smooth again, something is wrong with how the game deals with controllers atm

I play on keyboard+mouse. Stutters like mad.
  • Yeah I tried it last night, no controller, and it ran fine. I tried it again today with no controller, stutters to the point where the game is unplayable, so yeah, it is definitely not the controller, something else is wrong and I have no idea on a workaround atm to make the game playable. This game either needs a new patch right now or roll it back to the last one. Either way, can't have this patch live anymore. Flat out destroys the game.

Yup. This is the worst launch problems in a video I have seen in my life.

Great game for the first few hours but too bad I haven't touched it since. So waiting for it to be fixed.

How did this even happen. Unbelievable.
  • Put GPU memory limit back on.

I discovered something that could help : bring back Origin overlay if you disabled it, that stopped completely blinking for me.

This one. I can confirm with benchmarks that when GPU limit is off, there's constant spiking on frame times. With it on, only times where frame times spike is during scenery change and even then much lower spikes.

Someone stated on PCGW to fix it by setting 60Hz on monitor but that's just backwards approach with high refresh rate monitors.

  • Of course there is. You've not got enough VRAM.

    Tried on and off.

    No difference. Still broken.

I think my specs should run this just fine. Can max out most games at 60fps.

    i7 4720HQ quad core at 3.6ghz
    24B RAM
    PCIE SSD
    GTX 980m

I played the beta at almost maxed settings (before hyper) and was around the 65fps mark. The beta ran like butter smooth. Something since the beta screwed up the game. Even the textures were good in the beta.
  • There is a memory leak or something in the game, it just bogs itself down to death and there is no magic settings you can do, no delete this file, no unplug your controller that fixes it. It is now day 5 since this mess of a patch was released, why it hasnt been rolled back or fixed by now is beyond me.

There's your answer. The beta textures were lower grade to begin with. Additional to that, they then included Hyper for people with the most recent generation of cards, upon release.

Having high FPS isn't an indicator of good performance in this game. It's designed specifically to maintain good framerates, at the expense of image quality, to ensure your runs aren't ruined by hitching.

Go back to Ultra, put memory limit on. A 980m can't run Hyper. (Neither can a full 980, for that matter.) You have the cutdown, mobile version of a 2014, two year old graphics card. Don't expect it to be able to run 2016 games the way it did 2014 ones.

The point is more that the game ran much better before the patch. I was OK with the textures being Medium quality (because I just happen to not have much VRAM so I didn't expect else). But now the game forces me to use GPU memory restriction and it makes the shadows and textures much worse. I also noticed that in the areas with the pink/purple trees, the game starts lagging unless I set my resolution scale to 0.85, only then it runs smooth everywhere.

The 980m can play most games close to max or high and get 60fps. I play witcher 3 at 60fps at one setting lower than max.

I also played the game just fine before the patch. I was getting somewehere around 75+fps at high. Its not a very graphics heavy game. Only HBAO would drop it a bit.

Its the freezing thats the problem. The game runs 60fps+ easily when its not freezing. The freeze is for a second every 10 seconds or so. If you read my first post you would understand and not rant about gpu's. I know my computers well and I clearly know the difference between dekstop and laptop performance.

In fact look at this so you understand that my comp should be playing it just fine. Look at the game benchmarks on that article. Its quite close. In fact the bench on the site is lower in most games but thats still pretty good. For example the doom one is wrong. I get 60fps easy maxed out. On that it says 51.2. Nevertheless that is generally close.

What I am getting at is to be put simply, even if i lower my graphics the game will stutter. There are others also who face this problem. If you dont know, refrain from assumptions. Also I dont play on hyper at all. In fact I tested on High and Ultra.
  • In "Documents" folder under Mirrors Edge Catalyst theres file called PROF_SAVE_profile file, back it up and delete it. Ran the game and the black screen blinking which came after patch was gone. Most likely improves cut scenes also...
Kudos to the guy who figured it out in EA support forums.
  • I'm glad I finished the game before the patch. The flashing on loading screens and in menus SUCK (Not to mention the worthless leaderboards). Could run the game at max hyper settings @ a steady 60fps with no problems whatsoever before patch on a single GTX 970 ftw+. Now have a few texture issues (looks like overlapping textures on things at some things very far away) and the flashing issues on opening screen and whenever I try to change settings with sliders like music volume.

My main problem is with forcing me to update drivers when I was having no problems at all just to play the game. I'd continue to play if I didn't have these problems, it's a lot of fun, but I now just have an excuse to free up the space it consumes.
  • By going into Task Manager and setting Mirrors Edge to HIGH priority I am able to play the game. It may still stutter, but they are micro stutters. Still, the game is not running as well as it did prior to the last patch but at least it is now playable, no more hangs every 5 seconds.
  • Guys I have an Assumption why we have this Stutterings every ,let's say 5 seconds, it has definetly sth. to do with the memory of the video card becausw once i ran a gpu tool which has shown the gpu load, voltage etc... , i saw that every 5 seconds the Clock of the Memory jumps from f.e. 4000MHz to 800MHz or 3800MHz. But it's nit just the memory clock. It seems to be that also the GPU Boost Clock ist bouncing from , in my case, from 2100MhZ to 1200 or 1600 etc. .... . Moreover I saw that neither my cpu or gpu load is at 100%. Actually i run a msi geforce gtx 1070 and it has just a work load of 50-60 % Percent. Sometimes even 70. To proof that it is not because if my gpu or cpu, i ran the witcher 3 and voila.. 95-100% Workload gpu, 60 % cpu. No frame drops, no clock jumps everything stays perfectly at 2100mhz and also the memory clock stood at 4200mhz stable with hitting just 66 degrees. Well i hope that dice brings a patch , but for now, i'm gonna reinstall the game but this time without a patch and with a fresh version of windows 10. Oh that's gonna be funny . Well guys nevertheless have a great day and enjoy the beautiful game.
