No really, SPOILERS - last warning

So while hinted at in her dialogue and philosophical bias, it appears Rebecca Thane is definitely working for Omnistat, as confirmed by Dogen's ex-girlfriend, Nanda. After Omnistat's agent fails to secure the Reflection blueprint at Elysium, Rebecca is noted to be 'frantically trying to secure' something, 'by all means necessary.'

This makes me wonder if the Elysium infiltration is some kind of prelude to a technobiological assault on Cascadia by Omnistat. Perhaps Reflection is as much a system designed to safeguard and protect, as it is to control? This possibility adds weight to Kruger's assertion to Faith that she, 'knows nothing, and understands little,' and that there is 'more at stake' than she is aware of.

It also seems that Rebecca's final assault on The Shard, the explosion Faith witnesses from Kruger's apartment, is to a degree, prompted by something that Kruger didn't do.

Following KrugerSEC's assault on the tunnels, Rebecca is seen to lament the death of her lover, Tristan, and vows revenge on Gabriel for taking him away. However, it appears Tristan may actually have eloped with Dogen's ex-girlfriend, Nanda, who he appears to have been romancing in secret for a number of months, and who claims to have proof that Rebecca is working for Omnistat.

So what does this all mean? I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next game/DLC includes an Omnistat invasion of Glass, foreshadowed by the expose on Rebecca. One where Faith and the remaining runners have to scramble to in some way combat it, eventually going on to repel the invasion and secure freedom for everyone. It would add a level of danger to the environment and city again, and also allow for parkour/runner tech/enemy developments, to keep the gameplay fresh.

This would also give Faith and Isabel some common ground, and a narrative trigger for further association. Cat having killed Gabriel already shows that she's predisposed to her sister's words, yet an invasion of Glass that might have been avoided by the Reflection technology that Faith destroyed, would also given reason for conflict. Either way, it would put the sisters back in contact, and provide justification for continued exploration of their relationship. KrugerSEC's considerable military assets would undoubtedly be a feature in any attempt to fight back.

And what about Faith's tattoo, of which much was made of Faith's attempts to reappropriate it during Exordium and Catalyst's story? Almost certainly, the tattoo will be Erika's way of 'hiding' her work. It may even be the eventual solution that saves the city.

I would also expect, given the introduction of Nanda, her link to Dogen, Dogen's underlying morality, and his improved relations with Faith, for Dogen to be the central hub character for missions, refuge, and story development. That's heavy on the speculation side, but sits well with what we're given narratively.

Either way, the Catalyst title may well have more duality to it's meaning than we all originally thought. Here's looking forward to more.

  • Great post, surprised people missed out on it. This game may only be a foundation of a much richer story, almost lost my hopes up. Now the question is will devs tell the story through DLCs or an entire sequel.
    Don't get lost...
  • I think there's a general misconception regarding how much DICE can do via DLCs. There's a lot more possible imo, than people imagine.

Most importantly, all the cutscenes are pre-rendered, so the visual assets for them aren't client side. That cuts down on a huge amount of optimisation work and data transfer.

We've already seen how well the engine handles streaming the environment in Dragon Age and Need for Speed, so there's nothing stopping them from expanding the map considerably to include new areas and zones. A lot of that work appears to be half done in some areas as it is, with stuff across chasms and streets a lot more detailed than I might have expected.

If nothing more, I'd expect them to at least set up the next plot hook fully via DLC, before perhaps needing to move to a sequel to put everything in action. Maybe some more character-focused stuff, prior to them introducing the intrigue arc with Rebecca? Catch up with everyone else, before debuting Nanda and showing us that something's amiss?

Celeste & Avani's trip to Aurora, and what they might find there.
    Birdman.
    Nomad.
Faith and Icarus's presumed takeover of Noah's Cabal operations?
Dogen continuing to be the awesomeness that Dogen is (:p)
Plastic's exploration of the metagrid, study of the Reflection blueprint.
    Aline.
Rebecca's connection to Omnistat, Black November's future post-game.
    Nanda and Tristan.

Also worth mentioning - DICE have yet to address the fact that Faith killed someone as a child. While that sequence may simply be the justification for Noah keeping her offgrid and raising her himself, there's potential there for storytelling too.

    Exciting times, anyway.
