yeah, origin is not going to go away any time soon.
but if it helps, i never had any issues with it. i even got the game through origin and worked like a charm.

It wraps the .exe and makes it (almost entirely) tamper proof. That's all you need to know. Everything else you might read about it is melodramatic hyperbole or just plain inaccurate rubbish. Even the indies use it, these days.

It's not 100% hacker proof but it slows down a lot the pirating process to crack the game. It's less and less required though with game that needs an internet connection to work this days. It has no effect on the game itself.
