To be honest, Dice can't story. They can graphics, they can sound, they might be the best at it but when it comes down to story CDPR is miles ahead of them, it's not even funny (and they bring garpichs and sound on top).
The story may be decent, not expecting more. There won't be characters with a lot of sides. If you expect this, you are wrong.
And that issues like lag in cut scenes, this ugly traffic and popping up textures and bad textures all over the place are still in the game, it won't get high scores. And this will most likely be the last MIrror's Edge.
I can agree that the characters don't have very in depth backgrounds but comparing it to the Witcher series? That's a bit unfair because the Witcher story lines beat out just about every other game out there, lets compare apples to apples. Mirror's Edge: Catalyst would best be paired with something like Mafia or GTA (only cleaner and thank you for that Dice).
Lag in the cutscenes from what I've noticed has only affected older graphics cards, I haven't noticed any lag and my lowest frame rate has been 70 fps. The standard for games is the GTX 970 and AMD equivalent (290?). Attempting to run at a higher quality will cause lag.
I have yet to even care to see traffic because everything else makes up for anything street view from a distance. You are just asking for more lag due to processing. Still haven't seen any bad textures outside of beta, unless it's being limited due to a graphics card. As far as this being the last Mirror's Edge... I think Dice left themselves a lot of room to grow with all of the unused buildings in their map, I think this game has a lot more to do before the fire is extinguished and by the time the flame starts dying out once the game is completed, we will know more about the future of Faith and her place among gaming heroines.
What does lag in cutscenes have to do with better traffic? I can run ME on hyper with pretty stable 50-60 FPS (some drops every now and then) but I am not able to display 30 FPS locked cutscenes without any stutter?
It's not even traffic only. Popping up textures and really really bad textures all over the place. Only real difference to beta seem to be the absence of coil jump and better optimization.
But then from beta to final this horrible cut scenes appear (they haven't been in beta) so yeah, it's defo my GPU.
Guys may I ask you on which platform are you playing MEC? I loved the first ME and now I'm playing Catalyst on my PS4 (becasue i've just a non gaming laptop) and it's a lot of fun...but some textures of the building and some details don't look from this generation or do not loading in properly (? i'm not an expert)...hope a substantial patch will fix these issues soon
At 4:22 there is a good point that is given - the game is ahead of its time. They had a vision and tried really hard to make it come to life, compromising with low textured backgrounds and texture/model popping.
Haven't noticed these myself on release though, only in the beta (GTX 970 Ultras).
Let's be honest. ME is weird. It's not for everyone. A FPS with no guns? Heresy. A futuristic setting that is bright and colorful. A steep learning curve. It will probably never have wide appeal.
I agree the marketing could have been better. But once more people play the game, it may spread by word of mouth. Becauss it's a good game. Not amazing but really good. The gameplay is solid, it's just the story and side missions that are a little lacking in my opinion. Unless you're great at dashes or like hunting down every little collectible, the story is most of what you have, and it's better than the previous game but still cliche and predictable. I'm done with the story and I don't see myself returning a whole lot.
So all that to say that it's a good game but since it isn't groundbreaking I can't see it gaining a whole lot of new fans. If they had added a multiplayer element and beefed up the story with some side plots then it could have been groundbreaking.
There is definitely a flame war against it which I don't understand. Maybe because it's EA. Hopefully we see more from Faith. I like the direction they're going and Faith is a great heroine. I've grown to like Plastic and Icarus as well.
These reviews are so bad that it pains me! One guy semi-complained about "too much running" in the game and another one for backtracking. They were the ones screaming for an open-world game and now they complain about backtracking! You can't have an open world game without backtracking, you simpleton (reviewers)!
Another reviewer was angry because allegedly the game did not have a Fast Travel option... How do you deal with **** like this one? Of course, there is Fast Traveling in the game.
Hey Folks: Maybe it would be fair to consider the reviews in non-english countries as well. After all, their reviews are certainly no less professional.
Im gunna go ahead and say it. This game needed another year in development. There are so many bugs and issues, that makes such a beautiful and fun game just miss the mark by a hair. They needed to bring back faith in the best way possible and i just think the dev team could have brushed it up more with more time. The game still feels incredibly short story-wise. After i beat the story i feel like im all alone now. Like all the main characters have abandoned me now that ive beaten the story, and theres just not much incentive to do the side missions. Yes, the open world is awesome, but i still feel the best level design was in these story missions, even if they were more linear. Now i have to replay story missions if i want to experience these more intricate levels! I pray to god we get some more story DLC or something, because right now i'm honestly disappointed. The game is good, but I don't have it in me to feel that this is as good as it could have and should have been. And this is all coming from a huge mirror's edge fan too. I bought the first game when i was 12 and now here i am 8 years later, 20 years old, excited to play catalyst and a little bit hurt that it didn't live up to what it was claiming to be. I thought the beta was a super early build, but the truth is that the beta and the final build were extremely similar.
Agreed, except that I wasn't 12 when I bought the game! But it didn't one more year, it needed more people. More people for side or main missions, more people dedicated for collectibles (who know where to place them), more people for more different architectural styles.
Yup, I think it could've used more time. At the same time, I think they were being rushed. The delays are evidence enough of that. I'll have to disagree with popular opinion here and say that while some of the reviewers complains are silly, I don't think the scores are that inaccurate. While the art/design and gameplay are amazing, the story feels neglected and there are many technical issues. After carefully reviewing the pros and cons, I don't think we can give this game better than a 7.5 (at least not in good conscience). I have a review of the story here, and my thoughts regarding how I believe content was actually cut from the story due to time constraints: https://forums.mirrorsedge.com/discussion/comment/7141#Comment_7141
If the technical issues had been fixed, if there was more content and variety, and if the story had been what I think the developers had intended it to be, I wouldn't have a problem giving this game a 9-10/10. Sadly that wasn't the case.
I believe the shortcomings of MEC is the result of the disaster that was Battlefield 4 at its launch. I think that the people who stuck working to fix that game were supposed to be redirected to MEC earlier.
Of course, EA and DICE will deny this, if they even try to respond, but a look at the developers' names in both games might tell you the truth.

Sadly with the way the ratings appear and with the sales not being too high, especially because of the ratings, this is probably true

Yes, this is certainly reassuring to know. I am indeed comforted.
